3D CBCT X-Ray
The new, state-of the-art digital 3D x-ray at Brookline Dental Specialists is called cone beam computed tomography, or CBCT. It offers innovative medical imaging technology that provides our dentists with three-dimensional view of your teeth, jawbone, and other vital structures such as tooth roots, nerves sinuses. 3D CBCT greatly enhances the doctors’ ability to diagnose, evaluate, treat and care for patients. Cone Beam provides more information than conventional dental x-ray. Our doctors can more safely and effectively plan treatment in complex cases with this technology including surgical planning for impacted teeth, cephalometric analysis for orthodontic treatment planning, and reconstructive jaw surgery just to name a few!
During a 3D CBCT scan, the machine rotates around the patient, capturing images using a cone-shaped x-ray beam. The cone significantly reduces your exposure to radiation while providing 3 dimensional highly detailed images. The images can be manipulated with specialized software on a computer to construct a 3D representation of your teeth, and oral maxillofacial region including your mouth, jaw, and neck, ears, nose, and throat.
Dental implants are tooth root replacement. The digital 3D CBCT x-ray enables our doctors to see what they previously could not see using 2D x-ray technology. This improves confidence and safety. With dental implants, the 3D x-ray is taken using the new 3D CBCT machine and the images are uploaded into a computer using implant planning software. Our dentists and specialists can virtually place the dental implants in the optimal position prior to the implant procedure. Your entire treatment plan is executed digitally so the plan can be flawlessly executed during your surgery, implant placement and the seating of your implant crowns.

The new 3D CBCT x-ray machine provides the dentists at Brookline Dental Specialists the ability to see all of the patient’s vital structures such as bone, sinuses, tooth roots, and nerves to safely and accurately plan the full arch case ahead of time to the day of the procedure the dental implants are placed and the patient leaves with a new set of teeth.
Root Canal Therapy--Endodontics
A tooth is a living structure. The top of the tooth above the bone is called the crown, and the bottom of the tooth below the bone is called the tooth root. Inside the tooth root is called the root canal which has nerves and blood vessels just like other structures and organs in our body. Sometimes the root canal can get infected. Using the 3D CBCT x-ray, our general dentists and endodontic specialist can accurately see this infection and whether or not it has spread to the surrounding bone in the jaw. They can then use the 3D images to create a custom treatment plan to provide the necessary root canal therapy to stop infection and return the compromised tooth to health.
