Adult Orthodontics

Woman with a retainerDid you know orthodontic treatment is not just for teenagers? Many adult patients can also benefit from braces, and achieve a healthy, well aligned, beautiful smile at any age. Some adults who need orthodontic treatment might have worn braces in the past, but stopped wearing retainers and their teeth have shifted back out of alignment. Others have never had any orthodontics but can improve the look of their smiles and the function of their teeth with orthodontic realignment therapy. One of the best things we hear in our office from our adult orthodontic patients is the boost in self-confidence they feel as a result of their new smile!

How Can Braces Help Me?

If your teeth are misaligned you may experience frequent headaches, earaches, and facial pain. Misalignment, or crooked teeth, can also affect your bite. Your bite is the way your teeth meet up when you chew. Improper alignment can impact the way you grind food while chewing and can contribute gastrointestinal issues. Properly aligned teeth can even help prevent bone loss and the premature wearing of tooth enamel. Adult braces are designed by our orthodontic specialist to properly align your teeth and help you achieve optimal health and a more beautiful smile.

Why We Recommend Our Orthodontic Specialist

There are many options for braces being advertised out there these days that do not include evaluation and treatment plans made by a dentist with advanced orthodontic training. An orthodontic consultation with our specialist is recommended and will include digital impressions of your teeth and bite. These impressions allow us to plan your treatment and you can even see a digital simulation of the outcome before your treatment begins. At Brookline Dental Specialists orthodontic therapy is planned and delivered by our board certified
orthodontist Dr. Mariam Ghavamian and her team of assistants with decades of experience in orthodontic care.

Invisalign Clear Aligner Therapy

Invisalign aligners straighten your teeth with a series of custom-made aligners. Dr. Ghavamian uses digital scanning technology and software to design your aligners and even determine a digital visualization of the final outcome of your orthodontic treatment plan. There are many advantages to this type of treatment for adult patients. Invisalign aligners much more physically comfortable to wear than traditional bracket and wire braces. The aligners are similar to a mouthguard made to fit your teeth and gums and lack any sharp edges.

Because Invisalign is clear, most people won’t even know you are wearing them. You can smile and talk wearing your aligners without feeling overly self-conscious. Your aligners can also be removed as needed for eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing. You can easily eat the foods you want and practice better oral hygiene, which helps to lower your risk of developing gum disease or tooth decay while you go through the process of straightening your teeth. Cleaning and maintenance of your aligners is simple and convenient too. They can be cleaned by using a
toothbrush dipped in a small amount of bleach and water. Scrubbing them for a minute every other day, or as needed, will eliminate any stains.

How do I know if my child will need braces? At what age should they be evaluated with an orthodontist? How do I find an orthodontic specialist that I can trust? What can happen if my child needs braces but doesn’t get them? These are all common and important questions parents have about orthodontics and braces for their children and we have the answers!

Girl smiling at cameraAccording to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) children should have their first check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. Children that age still have a mixture of baby (primary) and permanent teeth. This examination is done when permanent teeth are replacing the baby teeth, and as your child’s face and jaws are still growing in order to give your orthodontist as much information as possible. Existing or developing problems can be identified and a treatment plan can be recommended and designed at that point. This type of examination with an orthodontic specialist can reveal if your child has an existing orthodontic problem, or if one is developing. You might also learn that no issues exist at the present time. At Brookline Dental Specialists we offer this exam at no charge and with no obligation. Our goal is to help parents get the proactive evaluation they need to make the best decisions for their child’s oral health now and into the future.

Image of teeth with bracesThere are several issues that braces can correct including a misaligned jaw and misaligned teeth due to overcrowding, spaces between teeth and misshapen teeth. An orthodontist strategically places brackets and bands and then the braces gradually alter the alignment of the teeth. This movement realigns the overbite or underbite and helps close the gaps between the teeth. Left untreated a misaligned bite can increase the risk of permanent damage to your child’s teeth, jaw, and mouth.

There are other long-term health benefits of orthodontic treatment as well. Straight, properly aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss. This can contribute to a reduced rate of tooth decay, gum disease and gingivitis. A correct bite allows the teeth and mouth to chew food more efficiently. Proper alignment protects adjacent teeth from excessive wear which can cause problems down the line. Correctly aligning teeth can even help to improve some speech issues.
